Passport photo guide
Resize an image for a passport photo — every size, in pixels
Passport and visa applications are unforgiving: the photo must be an exact size, with the head taking a specific share of the frame, on a plain background. This guide lists the required dimensions in pixels at 300 DPI for the most common countries, explains the crop proportions, and shows how to hit the exact size locally in your browser — no upload, no watermark, no queue.

Reference table
Passport photo sizes by country (at 300 DPI)
United States2 × 2 in — 600 × 600 px. Head between 1 and 1⅜ in (50–69% of height). Online upload: JPG, 200 KB – 2 MB.
United Kingdom35 × 45 mm — 413 × 531 px. Head and shoulders fill 70–80% of the frame.
Schengen / EU visas35 × 45 mm — 413 × 531 px. Face takes 70–80% of the photo.
Canada50 × 70 mm — 591 × 827 px. Head height 31–36 mm (about 45% of the frame).
India2 × 2 in — 600 × 600 px for passport; many visa forms also accept 3.5 × 3.5 cm — 413 × 413 px.
China33 × 48 mm — 390 × 567 px. Head width 21–24 mm, white background mandatory.
Australia35 × 45 mm — 413 × 531 px. Head 32–36 mm tall.
These pixel values come from the millimetre sizes at 300 DPI: pixels = mm ÷ 25.4 × 300. For a 600 DPI print, double them.
How it works
Crop first, resize second
01Crop to the ratio
Use the crop tool with the exact ratio for your country — 1:1 for the US and India, 35:45 (about 0.78) for the UK, Schengen, and Australia. Center the head so it occupies the required share of the frame: measure by eye using the head-height notes above.
02Set exact pixels
Turn off the aspect-ratio lock only after cropping (the crop already fixed the ratio), then enter the exact pixel dimensions from the table — for example 600 × 600 for the US. Resizing a correctly cropped image to its own ratio keeps it undistorted.
03Check the background and size
Most countries want plain white. If your background isn't, remove it and replace it with solid white. Then set a target file size if the form has one (the US portal wants 200 KB – 2 MB) and download.
Details that get photos rejected
Small things, big consequences
Head too large or smallThe most common rejection. Follow the head-height percentage for your country — typically 70–80% of frame height outside the US, 50–69% for the US.
Shadows or colored backgroundStand a metre away from a plain wall and light your face evenly. Shadows on the face or background get flagged; replace the background with solid white if needed.
Eyeglasses glareMany countries now require no glasses at all. If glasses are allowed, no glare and no tinted lenses.
Old photoPhotos must reflect your current appearance — usually taken within the last 6 months.
Questions
Passport photo FAQ
What size is a US passport photo in pixels?
The US 2 × 2 inch requirement equals 600 × 600 pixels at 300 DPI (or 1200 × 1200 at 600 DPI for higher print quality). The online submission tool accepts JPG between 200 KB and 2 MB.
What size is a UK or Schengen visa photo?
Both use 35 × 45 mm, which is 413 × 531 pixels at 300 DPI. The head must take roughly 70–80% of the photo height.
Do passport photos need a white background?
Most countries require a plain white or off-white background. If your photo has a colored background, remove it and replace it with solid white before resizing.
Does DPI matter for digital uploads?
For online uploads only the pixel dimensions matter — a 600 × 600 image is 600 × 600 regardless of its DPI tag. DPI becomes relevant when printing: 300 DPI is the standard that turns millimetre sizes into the pixel counts listed here.
Can I take a passport photo with my phone?
Yes, if you follow the composition rules: plain background, even lighting, neutral expression, head centered with the right head-to-frame ratio. Then crop and resize to the exact dimensions with a tool like FitMyPic.
